Shelf Cloud

Here’s a shelf cloud with a massive haboob…… okay, not really a haboob but the straight line winds were sure kicking up a lot of dust.  Been a spell of slow nights around here as far as storms go.  We have had some weak ones develop west of me near the border and they have been stationary, which is a good thing as far as pictures go, but they are not were not severe enough to warrant the drive.  Hoping end of July and August pick up the slack.

  4. The straight-line winds your refer is called a “Derecho” This is the type of storm that ripped through northern parts of Chicago on Monday leaving destruction and wide-spread power outages in its wake. You captured this ominous force of nature beautifully!

  8. Wow! Love the ominous feel to this shot! Those clouds are ridiculous and the control tower really puts in persepctive how huge that is! I can tell you first hand about the power of those ‘Derecho’ winds… I was in the Boundry Waters storm of ’99 (featured on the Weather Channel)! Great story over a couple of beers…
